[11/9] Kpop News Roundup

It’s actually been a quiet couple days but here are some updates of what has been happening in the world of kpop

Toth6y, Kpop’s first queer themed Kpop group, has made their debut with the song Wolf.

The collab group has 5 members but only three have participated in this song: Former Pink Fantasy’s Arang and TMC’s Seunghyuk and Wonsik.

The group was announced in April of this year and former Pink Fantasy members Miku and Momoka are also officially part of the group. The group’s theme is “Queer Liberation” and intends to make music with queer themes, and their official fandom color is rainbow.

The description for the song (via YouTube description) is:

The song centers on unleashing one’s instincts and identity through the symbol of a “wolf,” depicting the journey of embracing and expressing one’s true nature, free from societal norms and prejudices.

It conveys the sense of liberation and freedom that comes with accepting one’s instincts and identity as they intensify, encouraging listeners to break the boundaries of what society deems “normal” or “abnormal” and to express their true selves without fear.

The werewolf image metaphorically represents those who are seen as “different” in mainstream society, highlighting their journey of discovering their own strength and identity. The lyrics, “We are neither foxes nor dogs, we’re more sophisticated,” emphasize a pride in transcending conventional norms and social structures, celebrating diversity and unique value with confidence.

Rose and Bruno Mars’s song APT has been hitting some criticism in Japan recently.

Japanese fans have been claiming that APT is a little too similar to some part’s of Miku Sawai’s song “sorry i can’t be a good kid”. They claimed the song has similar chord progressions.

In a Korean news article I found, it explained that legally it can only be considered plagiarism if at least 8 measures are identical, and APT does not meet that criteria so legally it is not plagiarism.

(For context, the part they were claiming was plagiarized was the “don’t you want me like I want you baby don’t you need me like I need you now” part.)

The article also gave a list of songs with this same chord progression, further pushing that it’s not plagiarism:

  • Uhm JungHwa’s: Three-way encounter
  • Coldplay: Viva La Vida (Rose I’m still waiting on your full cover of this song)
  • IVE:  I want
  • Ava Max:  So Am I
  • Lost Sky: Where We Started
  • One Direction: Night Changes

Baskin Robin’s Korea is currently in a controversy over allegedly copying IVE’s Wonyoung

Baskin Robin’s released a new ice cream flavor called “Lucky Vicky Mochi”

Wonyoung’s English name is Vicky and she will refer to herself with that name often.

Additionally, “Lucky Vicky” is apparently a nickname fans have given Wonyoung. The nickname first arose after she was talking to some fans about how she went to go get a scone and she got a fresh warm one out of the oven claiming she was a “Very Lucky Vicky”.

Additionally, there is a trending mindset adopted from Wonyoung online (in the source article they call it a “Wonyoung way of thinking” but in the western fandom fans call this “Wonyoungism”). Apparently as part of this trend, “Lucky Vicky” became a trending word in this Wonyoung way of thinking/wonyoungism community and gets used/tagged for various things.

It was confirmed in the article that Baskin Robins did not talk to Wonyoung about naming this ice cream flavor after her. After the controversy Baskin Robin’s deleted all traces of the ice cream flavor online though you can still find it in person and at 3rd party places that sell Baskin Robin’s ice cream. There has also been no formal apology released yet.
